On Wednesday, July 1, Pickens County Library Branch Manager Katie Dobson participated in the City of Jasper America250 Time Capsule Burial at Perrow Park in Downtown Jasper, which had just had its own Grand Opening the month before on June 13.
Dobson, a member of the Pickens County America250 Committee, represented Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) and Pickens County Library at the event. The time capsule was filled with items from multiple local organizations, including the Sequoyah Regional Library System. SRLS contributed one of its limited edition America250 library cards and a rack card detailing the America250 celebrations at the library.
“Serving on Pickens County's America250 committee was an incredible opportunity to bring our community together, particularly through our time capsule,” says Katie Dobson. “The items selected for the capsule not only capture our local history, but also highlight the everyday stories, achievements, and memories of the people who make our county special today.”
Other participating organizations included the Sequoyah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jasper Lions Club, Keep Pickens Beautiful, the Pickens Progress, the Rotary Club of Jasper, Pickens County Schools, and many more.
Here are some examples of items buried:
- Pickens County Progress Newspaper highlighting the Pickens High School Baseball Team's State Championship Win
- Daughters of the American Revolution America250 Proclamation
- City of Jasper Police Department and Fire Department patches
- Postcards from local businesses
After the time capsule was sealed and placed in its new home, each community member in attendance had the opportunity to help bury it in the ground. The time capsule will be re-opened in 2076 for the USA's Tricentennial anniversary.
In addition to the Time Capsule Burial, SRLS has celebrated America250 in multiple different ways with our community. From the America250 reading challenge and July 4th library celebrations to partnering with local historical societies and highlighting our community’s history, SRLS shines as a pivotal organization for America250 celebrations.
